Even the urging of creator Hajime Isayama couldn't keep director Shinji Higuchi's live-action Attack on Titan film out of a recent "most disappointing movie" poll.
HiHo magazine's March issue published its "2015 Fiscal Year Stinker Awards" listing the year's top 10 most disappointing films. In first place is the the first live-action Attack on Titan film, that was lambasted by some 140 Japanese critics during its run. The film was plagued by fan blowback after Higuchi insulted promotional staff followed by the film's modeling director leaving his own choice words for critics.
Many of the complaints of the film stemmed from production values and changes from the source material. Screenwriter Tomohiro Machiyama stated the films in the series feature drastic changes to plot points and characters readily established and even beloved by fans, with popular characters not even appearing in the film. He also confirmed that original creator Hajime Isayama was made aware of and approved the changes.
Fans took to the continued changes in the second film about as well as would be expected. The Attack on Titan: End of the World film also made the list at #3.

HiHo also publishes a "Best of" list. This year's winners are included in the same issue with Mad Max: Fury Road honored in the top spot.
Higuchi has moved on from the Attack on Titan films to work with Hideaki Anno on TOHO's Shin Godzilla film. Circulating photos claiming to be of the film's titular monster leaked earlier this month.
