Yoyogi Animation Gakuin students, staff animate Mahō Ossan Shōjo Eibsu★chan
The Yoyogi Animation Gakuin school presented the original anime short Mahō Ossan Shōjo Eibsu★chan (Magical Geezer Girl Ebisu-chan) this week. This collaboration between the school and manga creator/entertainer Yoshikazu Ebisu had evolved from concepts that Ebisu had left out of four-panel manga displayed at the school. The story follows a magical girl who takes on a monster that appears at a boat race venue.
As seen in the behind-the-scenes footage below, Ebisu himself voices the magical girl — his first voice-acting gig ever. The school's students and teachers handled all other aspects of production, including animation sketches, backgrounds, voices, and sound.
Ebisu first made his mark in surreal and absurdist manga, and Blast Books' Comics Underground Japan book published some of his stories in English. As an entertainer, he has appeared in such films as Waterboys, Happily Ever After, Always: Sunset on Third Street, Thermae Romae, I'll Give It My All... Tomorrow (including an official April Fool's joke), and Hibi Rock.
