Nestlé's KitKat chocolates are well known for their Japan-only flavors like grilled potato, cherry blossom, fruit parfait, and more. Many of these are only available in particular areas of the country and serve as regional souvenirs while others, like Green Tea flavor, are Japan-exclusive and popular with tourists. Green tea is seen as quintessentially Japanese, and Nestlé is looking to add another unmistakable flavor to the line-up.
The new flavor is sake, Japanese rice wine that can be served hot or cold. Nestlé is hoping to garner more foreign tourist money with the flavor. The taste was achieved by kneading sake powder into white chocolate wafers.
The new treat will debut on February 1 in a three-box pack for 150 yen (US$1.25) or a nine-box pack for 700 yen (US$5.75).
